Incheon, April 22, 2024 BMW Group Korea refurbished and reopened its research and development (R&D) center in Incheon, which is equipped with state-of-the-art test equipment. The R&D center is an upgrade from the facility established in 2015, which also serves as a BMW driving center.
The plan to upgrade the R&D center in South Korea has been announced by BMW since 2019. They signed a partnership with the city of Incheon and the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZ) in 2021 for the construction of the facility.
This latest BMW R&D center has a test and repair laboratory, a certification test site, a test track, and an electric car charging station. The facility can accommodate at least 50 employees in the certification and development of BMW car products imported into South Korea.
BMW plans to collaborate with local companies, research centers, and universities to develop navigation systems, voice recognition technology, and interface prototypes.
This move was made by BMW to strengthen its commitment in the South Korean market, where they managed to surpass Mercedes-Benz as the best-selling foreign car in 2023 with sales of 77,395 units out of a total of 271,034 units of foreign cars sold there.
