JAKARTA – Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, emphasized Indonesia’s significance as a key market for absorbing Apple Inc. products. Supporting his claim, Agus Gumiwang stated that in 2022, Indonesia imported 2.79 million units of smartphones, with 85% of them being Apple products. “Out of the 2.79 million units, I can confirm that 85% are Apple products,” Agus told reporters at the Merdeka Palace on Wednesday (17/4/2024). However, he expressed Indonesia’s desire for Apple products to utilize more local components through investments in the country. He mentioned one such investment by Apple, which is education for future Apple developers. “Apple has taken a very unique approach that we’ve adopted to calculate the Domestic Component Level (TKDN). This is based on their investment, and their investment is in building educational infrastructure for future developers, namely the Apple Developer Academy,” Agus explained. The Minister also urged Apple Inc. to commit to building factories in Indonesia. He pointed out that Indonesia’s industry already has a comprehensive ecosystem for mobile phone components. “That [commitment to building factories] is also what we want to encourage. The fact is that mobile phone components are already available in Indonesia. The batteries, cables, and others, we will try business matching with Apple to see if they can use products from within the country that we already have prepared,” he said. On the other hand, Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook shared his views on Indonesia with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) during a meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday (17/4/2024). Tim Cook expressed his fondness for Indonesia’s ambiance, particularly regarding market sentiment towards their products. This statement followed his meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, and Minister of Communication and Information Technology Budi Arie Setiadi at the State Palace on Wednesday (17/4/2024). “I’m delighted to be in Indonesia. Indonesia is a crucial market for us, and I’ve had a good conversation with the President about our commitment to this country,” said Tim Cook.
