Mayor of Ternate Honored for Policy Waiving Building Permit Fees for Low-Income Families

Ternate — A bold local policy has earned Mayor H. M. Tauhid Soleman of Ternate national recognition. The city was named the Best Local Government in North Maluku by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement (KemenPKP RI) for its initiative to waive Building Permit (PBG) retribution fees for low-income families.

The award was presented by Dr. Imran, Director General of Rural Housing, during a provincial housing program evaluation at the Bela Hotel Ternate on September 12, 2025. The policy, which removes financial barriers for low-income households seeking to build or renovate homes, was praised as a model of inclusive governance.

“This is not my personal achievement, but the achievement of all elements in Ternate,” Mayor Tauhid stated, dedicating the award to the city’s residents and government staff. He emphasized that the initiative reflects a collective commitment to social equity and sustainable urban development.

The program involves multiple agencies, including the Public Works Department, Housing and Settlement Office, and local licensing authorities. By coordinating across sectors, the city ensures that the benefits reach those who need them most.

Officials from the Ministry highlighted that Ternate’s policy directly supports the national target of expanding access to decent housing, while also aligning with the government’s broader Asta Cita agenda under President Prabowo Subianto.

Beyond easing financial burdens, the initiative is seen as a catalyst for community resilience. By enabling more families to secure safe and affordable housing, Ternate strengthens its social fabric and sets an example for other municipalities across Indonesia.

The recognition underscores a growing truth: leadership at the local level can drive transformative change. Ternate’s approach demonstrates how innovative governance, rooted in empathy and pragmatism, can uplift communities and inspire national progress.
