Synergy between Bapanas and Polbangtan: Encouraging the Coffee Teaching Factory Program to Increase Indonesian Coffee Competitiveness

The Deputy for Diversified Consumption and Food Safety of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Andriko Noto Susanto, visited the Teaching Factory (TEFA) of Miniplant Industry and Modern Coffee Nursery of Politeknik Pembangunan Pertanian (Polbangtan) Medan on Saturday (30/3).
Andriko was accompanied by Head of the Agricultural Education Center (Kapusdiktan) Idha Widi Arsanti, Founder and Chairman of Mcorp, a Leading Marketing Professional Service Firm in ASEAN, Hermawan Kartajaya, and Director of Polbangtan Medan Yuliana Kansrini.

The purpose of this visit was to see firsthand the learning and business processes in the coffee sector implemented at Polbangtan Medan. The group saw directly the coffee nursery to the processing of coffee beans, and discussed with Polbangtan students regarding the utilization of TEFA for the continuity of education.

Yuliana Kansrini explained that TEFA is a learning method that approaches factual conditions in business and industry. Polbangtan Medan works closely with stakeholders to ensure the competence of its students is in line with market demand.

One of the TEFA systems developed by Polbangtan Medan is the Modern Coffee Nursery and Processing Industry Miniplant. This TEFA is a place for learning and business in the coffee sector, so that students will be able to develop their potential as coffee entrepreneurs from nurseries to processing.

The implementation of TEFA is in line with Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman’s direction on entrepreneurship. Young entrepreneurs are expected to become socioagripreneurs who maintain the sustainability of agricultural development and produce professional, independent, and competitive agricultural human resources.

Head of the Agricultural Extension and Human Resource Development Agency (BPPSDMP) Dedi Nursyamsi pointed out that farmer youth have an important role in realizing national food self-sufficiency and increasing rice production.

Bapanas’ visit to Polbangtan Medan showed support for the development of the TEFA Coffee program. This program is expected to improve the quality of Indonesian coffee human resources and increase the competitiveness of Indonesian coffee in the global market.
