Minister of Trade Shows Concern: Champions Migrant Workers’ Interests at the Forefront

Jakarta, April 17, 2024 – Responding swiftly to widespread public dissatisfaction, the Minister of Trade has taken decisive action by revoking Regulation of the Minister of Trade (Permendag) Number 36 Year 2023 on Import Policy and Control. The regulation, which came into force in March 2024, has drawn significant criticism for its perceived complexity and potential adverse effects on businesses and consumers alike.

Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan announced the reversal during a press conference in Jakarta yesterday, stating, “We have decided to revert to Permendag 25/2022.” This announcement underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised by stakeholders and maintaining a stable and conducive business environment.

The decision to rescind Permendag 36 signifies a strategic shift towards a more balanced regulatory approach, aimed at fostering economic growth while safeguarding consumer interests. The Ministry of Trade pledges to continue collaborating with relevant stakeholders to develop import regulations that are both effective and equitable.

This proactive stance taken by the government demonstrates its responsiveness to public feedback and its dedication to promoting a regulatory framework that supports sustainable economic development while prioritizing the welfare of consumers and businesses alike.
